Custom Cable Assembly RFQ Checklist: 12 Details That Prevent Delays

Prepare a production-ready cable assembly request with connector ends, pinout, cable, shielding, length, motion, environment, testing and documentation.

The fastest cable quotation is not the shortest email. A complete request lets engineering check compatibility, price the correct materials and prepare a drawing without repeated clarification.

Best starting package: mating-part details, end-to-end pin map, cable construction, length definition, environment, quantity, schedule and required tests.

The 12 details to include

  1. Connector A manufacturer, series, part number or interface drawing.
  2. Connector B or all branch-end interfaces.
  3. Contact-face orientation and gender for every end.
  4. Complete pin-to-pin map, including shields and unused conductors.
  5. Signal, protocol, voltage and current for each circuit group.
  6. Cable type, conductor size, pair construction and shielding.
  7. Length and the exact datums used to measure it.
  8. Straight or right-angle exit and right-angle clocking.
  9. Static, drag-chain or torsional motion requirements.
  10. Temperature, water, dust, chemicals and UV exposure.
  11. Labels, colors, overmold, braid, conduit and packaging.
  12. Prototype quantity, annual volume, delivery target and acceptance tests.

Define length so production can measure it

“Two metres” can mean cable cut length, connector tip-to-tip length or distance between defined connector datums. Right-angle bodies and branches make the difference significant. Put the nominal dimension, tolerance and measurement points on the drawing.

Separate electrical test from application validation

Continuity / shorts Checks the intended pin mapping and unintended connections.
Insulation resistance / high potential Checks defined isolation characteristics under an agreed method.
Shield continuity Checks the specified screen path; it does not alone prove network performance.
Functional test Confirms protocol, image transfer, trigger timing or powered operation in a representative system.
Motion / environment Validates the assembly under agreed bending, torsion, temperature or ingress conditions.

Approve one controlled definition

LMConn cable documentation covers industrial Ethernet, machine-vision I/O, USB 3.0 Micro-B and mixed industrial interfaces. Whether the assembly is standard or customized, approval should end with one revision-controlled drawing that purchasing, production and inspection can all use.
